Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today: composer, arranger, producer, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. He fuses a wide range of world music and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original urban sound - all with a Latin jazz heart. On stage, Mr. Sosa is a charismatic figure, inspiring his fellow musicians with his dynamic playing and improvisational approach to the music - an approach full of raw emotional power and humor. Mr. Sosa invariably inspires audiences to their feet and to join him in chorus vocals, heightening the sense of spontaneity and connection ... The official site. Includes news, photos, biographies, interviews, reviews, and tour dates :
About the Album : Omar Sosa moves from idea to idea, sound to sound, and theme to theme with the attention span of a 4-year-old boy with ADD. Once the Cuban-born pianist immigrated to San Francisco in 1995, he released several albums in quick succession, each with little in common with the others and each featuring a different lineup and influences. Sentir offers an interesting mix of several Moroccan musicians, a rapper, a Cuban vocalist, a Venezuelan percussionist, and the hyperactive Sosa on piano. As one would imagine, there are surprises around every bend as the album unfolds. Highlights include choruses of interwoven vocals--particularly on "Sister in Yellow"--the rich calliope and percussion throughout, and the romantic "Tres Notas en Amarillo." Somehow the Moroccan-Cuban-Latin fusion works for Sosa. This is in part because the songs move along quickly, seldom waiting for ideas to play out. But it's also due to taste and pacing: the album contains some quiet moments that give the listener time to breathe. For music fans with a bent for musical multiculturalism, Sentir is a global music adventure well worth taking.

Akli D is a Berber performer and songwriter born in rural Algeria, an artist whose unique style combines North African Chaâbi music and the folk traditions of the country’s Kabylie region mixed with everything from the American protest song to the Mississippi blues and even echoes of m’balax, Senegal’s modern pop music.
These rich ingredients have been cooked to perfection on ‘Ma Yela’ (‘If There Was’), his new album, on Because Music, produced by the legendary Manu Chao whose own 1998 album ‘Clandestino’ was a landmark in global Latin fusion. Chao, of course, was also responsible for Amadou & Mariam’s worldwide hit, ‘Dimanche à Bamako’ in 2005.
Akli D – Akli Dehlis - was born in Kerouan, a small village in the Kabylie region east of Algiers. He is a Berber, the non-Arab people who, since prehistoric times, have inhabited the southern Mediterranean coastline from Egypt to the Atlantic. The Berbers dominated North Africa until the Arabs conquered it in the Seventh century.
For as long as he can remember, Akli D was surrounded by Berber music. Indeed, his mother was a traditional folk singer so it was perhaps inevitable that his musical ambitions began to crystallise when his reached his teens. Akli D’s early favourites were such popular Kabyl singers as Idir and Cheikh El Hasnaoui et Slimane Azem although the family’s radio also picked up the popular music of America and France.
In March 1980 police stopped the writer Mouloud Mammeri from entering the town of Tizi Ouzou to give a lecture on ancient Berber poetry. Students took to the streets in the Kabylie region and later in Algiers and, on 20th April, the security forces stormed Tizi Ouzou University. These events, known as the ‘Berber Spring’, centred on the language issue – the Kabyles see their cultural and linguistic heritage in pre-Islamic North Africa.
The Berber Spring marked a bitter new era in Algeria, resulting in tens of deaths and hundreds of political prisoners. For the young Akli D it eventually meant exile in Paris.
He became a street musician, playing in public squares and in the Parisian Metro. Little by little, he tried out many different musical genres - blues, rock, reggae, folk - all of which later influenced his compositions.Akli D’s other passion was cinema. It led him to take an Actor’s Studio course at the Café de la Danse in Paris, at which time ‘mektoub’ (destiny) intervened in the shape of an American patron. Akli D moved in San Francisco where, in addition to his studies, he played at the Cafe Internationale and other clubs, performing his wholly original and totally eclectic collection of songs.
Eventually returning to Paris – Akli D also spent some time living in Ireland after his American experience – his career became totally centred on music. Akli D accompanied two female singers in a chaâbi-saharian blues combo called El Djazira and went on to form his first group, Les Rebeuhs des Bois. The band played the city’s café and club circuit, enabling Akli D to properly hone the songwriting skills reflected in ‘Anefas Trankil’ – ‘Let Him Be’ in the Berbers’ Tamazight language – his debut album, released on the small Next Music label in 2001.
There is one small café that Akli D has always particularly favoured. It is in the Menilmontant area of Paris, a quarter heavily populated by Arab and North African communities. The café encourages spontaneous musical encounters, a place where people pick up guitars, bendirs and derboukas and jam through the night. And it was in this particular café that Akli D met Manu Chao.He was mesmerised by Akli D, an artist who read Kabyl poetry over folk, gypsy-jazz and Chaâbi music. This initial meeting led to Chao’s offer to produce Akli D’s second album resulting, of course, in ‘Ma Yela’.
‘Ma Yela’ embraces a wider musical spectrum and lyrical concerns. The songs are a radical call to action, speaking of everything from aid to Chechen orphans and the fight for registration of illegal immigrants to the battle of Algerian women against the family code, a commitment that so distinguishes this extraordinary talent and his unique new Algerian music.
Sources of lyrics :
SALAM
Words mixed together, Salam in Arabic, Shalom in Hebrew, Alikum shalom for peace and fraternity. The evocation of a dream land where populations meet as simply as words.
CHECHNIA
(words from Chechen children)“Tchetchenia” is the cry of a child of war, a child who doesn’t understand the horrors surrounding him and even less what might justify them. This song was born of a meeting between the artist and Chechen children. Led by calm music with Malian influences, a healing song, like an African griot.
MALIK
The revolutionary power of reggae, the mandol for Kabyl origins, Malik is a tragic destiny, that of Malik Oussekine, a pacifist student who died under the blows of the police at the famous student demonstration of 1986. A song in his memory, which is not meant to judge or aggress, but to say “never again”.
MOKRANE D.
The story of this calm Kabyl who managed to salvage the Berber culture, who faced his destiny as an Algerian, while refusing to submit or even to flee into exile.
C. FACILE
“It’s easy… it’s hard”, a time for derision and humour.Hispanic music with gipsy sounds, like a tribute to all the nomads of this world. A song full of smiles about immigration, exile and uprooting.
AR PARIS
More than a love song, “AR Paris” is a youthful dream of living love in the open, from the streets of Alger to those of Paris…

Born in 1974 in Lebanon, into a family of musicians, Claude was first introduced to the violin by his father, who played the rebeck. When he was eight, his brother gave him his first violin, and he began to play at home with his family, mostly improvising to Arabic music. He then joined the Beirut Conservatory, but as the war in Lebanon led to its closure, Claude was forced to continue his musical studies by himself.
Seemingly, his self-taught technique was good enough to meet academical standards, because at the age of eighteen he was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue his studies at the Royal College of Music in London, under the tutorship of Professor Grigory Zhislin and later Rodney Friend. There he was introduced to an extensive repertoire of classical music, not only during classes, but also by listening to symphonic orchestras whenever possible. It wasn’t just classical repertoire he absorbed at the time: living in London, where there is music from every corner of the planet, Claude was exposed to an array of musical cultures. He listened to Indian music, African music, Chinese music, looking for sounds to fuse together.
During his fourth year of studies at the Royal College of Music, this search led to the first recording session of his own music, "Red Desert“, which combined Arabic improvisations with the sound of an Indian tabla and a string octet.
In 1997, for his final recital, he also chose a self-penned composition, "Oriental Images“, which won him the First Prize for Best Performance, and his debut concert on the stage of St. John’s in London’s Smith Square paved the way for a series of live dates in London and abroad.
In 1999, Claude was invited to Weimar in Germany to join the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The aim of this "West Eastern Divan“ was to give young musicians from the Middle East and Germany an opportunity to study and play together. Barenboim chose Claude as musical director of the orchestra.
Claude’s improvisation attracted so much attention that he was offered a recording contract with Warner Brothers. In the summer of 2000 he began to record his debut, self-titled album with producer Michael Brook at the Sound Factory in Los Angeles. This record features Pakistani singer Forroukh Fateh Ali Khan, the brother of the legendary Nusrat.

Zaman Al wasel : Chant Arabou-Andalous
.

Her real name is Amal Al Atrache. Sister of the Great Farid El Atrache. Their parents are Princess Alia and Prince Fahd Al Atrache. After the great success that Farid had been in the national radio station as a singer, his sister's talent was discovered by Mouhammad Al Qasabji, and she was given, by Daoud Housni(who later took care of training her), a classy name, Asmahan.
Like the older members of the family, she came from the Djebel Druse where her forebears were the Emirs until Lebanon and Syria became a French mandate.
Born in 1918, she lived in Lebanon until 1920, when her father was appointed Governor of the Province of Demergi in Turkey. He soon returned, however, to spend the remainder of his lifeas an ordinary citizen in his native mountains. Asmahan's father died in 1924, when she was only six, and her family then emigrated to Egypt, where the little princess, who had been cherished by her father, was to experience the hardships which befall a family that has fallen upon evil days. Although of noble origin, her mother Set Aleya was reduced to singing at private parties to support herself and her children, three boys and a girl, the future Asmahan. Everyone in the family could sing, but success was only to crown the efforts of the two more gifted: Farid and Asmahan.
Asmahan knew something about the European way of singing - perhaps she had gained it just by listening - and she probably unconsciously made use of this knowledge when interpreting genuinely authentic Arabic songs. This is very noticeable in for example "dakhalt marra fignina" by Mid'het Assem and "ya tûyûr" by Kassabgi. Yet an Arabic listener was not disturbed by this foreign element for Asmahan was at the same time a past-master of every aspect of Arabic song. This voice, alas too soon silenced, dominated Arabic singing in the thirties to such an extent that - with the possible exception of ZakariaAhmed - composers who were working for Ûm Kalsûm wanted to work with Asmahan.
It was "aleïk salat allah", a chant composed by Farid Elatrash that launched her as a singer. He had composed it as a musical illustration to the film El Mahmal Esharif, afilm about the caravan transporting every second year the embroidered material going to shroud the Sacred Shrines: black velvet for the Kaaba, green silk for the Tomb of the Prophet in Medina. It's the waqf - a Cairene religious association whom tied up legacies have been bequeathed through the years - that gets a number of unpaid women to embroider them. The song above was first interpreted by Farid; then the producer preferred the interpretation by Asmahan, the one which was going to be known all over the world in the1937-38.
Asmahan never fell into the trap of interpreting the works of one composer alone, as Faïza Ahmed, and Warda at the beginning of her career, later did. She cooperated with her brother Farid in the film "intissar echabab" and "gharam wentiqam" but she insisted on singing songs by other composers. She collaborated with Kassabgi, Riad Sombati and even with Abdelwahab (in the Operette " magnûn Leïla" in the film "yûm saïd ") although he was noton good terms with her brother at the time.
The way Asmahan sang her songs awakened people and intrigued their ear accustomed to traditional music. The song"ayûh ennaïmû" by Riad Sombati in the film "gharam wentiqam" proved that it is possible to give a highly dramatic interpretation of an Arabic song without losing its Oriental character.
She died in 1944 in a car accident caused, it is rumoured, by the war waged between the secret services in Cairo during World War II.
Although her life was short her influence on Arabic singing will stil be felt for a long time. Whereas Ûm Kalsûm brought classical singing to a perfection surpassing that aimed at by hermasters such as Abû al-°Ila, Asmahan's style of interpretation has enriched Arabic song by opening a window to the music of the Western World, without obliterating the fundamental difference between the two sorts of music. The mastery she displayed when interpreting an Arabic songin the classical manner such as "leïta lilbarraqi aïnan" was equalled by that she showed when singing "ya tûyûr" in a styleinfluenced by Western technique, and the wonder is that, in doing so, she did not disturb in the least Arabic listeners.
