La Kahena was a Jewish Berber woman who united tribes in the Kabylia mountains of North Africa against Arab invaders in the 7th century. Her fierce resistance to the Muslim invasion made her something of a legend. DJ Sabbah honours Kahena’s spirit with this dense and hypnotic CD. The eight tracks are also a homage to the region’s amazingly diverse tradition of women singing. Raï legend Cheba Zahouania sets the tone with the opening track “Esh ‘dani, alash mshit” (“Why did I follow him”). The 8 minute song condenses rhythms from reggae, traditional ‘oud, violin and, of course, raï music, all underscoring achingly sad vocals. These are matched later by the Haddarates from Morocco, five women whose swirling Sufi songs conjure dreamy images of windy Saharan landscapes and trance-like dances...
